Crushed Red Pepper Flakes (Homemade)
We use crushed red pepper all the time, so my husband started making it himself—and let me tell you, it’s amazing! My sister-in-law had a bunch of extra peppers from her garden, and we couldn’t let them go to waste. The flavor is so much fresher and more vibrant than anything store-bought. If you have some extra peppers on hand, it’s such a fun project to try. We use a dehydrator (but a very low oven temp can work, too) and a mortar and pestle to crush them, and it works so well!

Note, these instructions are written assuming the standard serving size, since you have modified the number of servings, these steps may need to be modified for best results
- Wash and thoroughly dry all of the peppers. Slice off the stem end of the pepper and discard.
- Lay the peppers out in a dehydrator set to 140°F for 6–12 hours, until they are extremely brittle. *If using an oven, set it to the lowest temperature and arrange the peppers in a single layer on a lined baking sheet. Bake for about 2–6 hours, until they are extremely brittle.
- Let the peppers cool completely.
- Transfer the cooled peppers to a mortar and pestle and crush them to your desired size.
- Store in an airtight container and enjoy as you like!
