I had some fun jazzing up the classic grilled cheese by air frying it, stacking creamy brie, crisp apples, and adding in some delightful caramelized onions. This sandwich is pure deliciousness—a cozy delight for those chilly days when you need something to warm you up. I hope you love this brie apple grilled cheese as much as I do! - Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of gluten free bread.
- Caramelize the onions by sautéing them in a pan over medium heat with a bit of oil. You can sprinkle a pinch of salt over the onions after they've started to sweat, which helps draw out moisture, aiding in the caramelization process. As the onions cook down and turn golden brown, consider reducing the heat to low to prevent burning and ensure they caramelize evenly without rushing the process. This may take around 15-20 minutes. You can also make these onions ahead of time in a larger batch and use them throughout the week, which would help reduce the total time it takes to make this recipe!
- Place thinly sliced brie on one bread slice (buttered side down) followed by stacked thinly sliced apples and caramelized onions.
- Close the sandwich by placing the second piece of bread on top. Optionally, secure the sandwich with a wooden toothpick to prevent the bread from falling off in the air fryer.
- Air fry at 375°F for about 5 minutes, checking halfway through and flipping as needed until the cheese melts and the bread turns golden and crispy. Note: Air fryers vary, so cooking times and temperatures may need adjustment based on your specific model for optimal results. Adjust as necessary.
Notes
For the perfect apple brie grilled cheese: First, secure it with a wooden toothpick or an air fryer-safe stick to keep the top bread piece in place during cooking as sometimes the pressure from the air fryer can cause the top bread to fly off. And for easy melting, slice the brie thinner before assembling.Secondly, prep ahead by caramelizing onions in advance; make a larger batch for the week to effortlessly use in various recipes. This is optional, but can save a lot of time. Lastly, while any apple variety works, opt for Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala for their balanced sweetness, which complement the rich flavors of brie and caramelized onions in this recipe.
