Chocolate Crinkle Cookies (with Gluten-Free Variation)
These Chocolate Crinkle Cookies are a holiday classic that feature brownie-like centers and crispy outsides coated with powdered sugar. An instant hit for holiday parties and cookie swaps, this recipe is one I've been making 30+ years and it always turns out perfectly. This year I've swapped in my go-to gluten-free all-purpose flour to make these accessible to a wider audience. They puff up even a bit more and still feature that gooey, delightful center. The gluten-free versions are featured in photos on wire racks, while the other images are of the original recipe with all-purpose flour.

- Add sugar and vegetable oil to a mixing bowl and cream together. Stir in cocoa powder.
- Add eggs, 1 at a time, mixing between each. Stir in vanilla.
- In a separate bowl, mix together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the wet, stir until fully combined and no clumps appear.
- Cover and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, up to overnight.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Add powdered sugar to a bowl.
- Roll dough into balls. Coat with powdered sugar. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat, leaving at least 2 inches between each. Bake for 11 to 13 minutes.
- Remove from oven, let rest for a few minutes and transfer to a wire rack to completely cool. Store in an air-tight container.
Notes
Baking for 11 minutes works perfectly for my oven. Depending on consistency and oven temperature, you might need to bake for 1 minute less or up to 13 minutes. Remember cookies will continue to bake as they cool on the pan.
