Fried mozzarella sticks are such a nostalgic food from childhood. Eating them takes me right back to hot summer days at the pool, and getting crispy, greasy fried mozzarella sticks and chicken nuggets from the snack bar. This recipe is fun to make, and so delicious to eat. They aren't greasy since you make them in the air fryer. You can keep them in the freezer for 6 months, so they are ready to go any time you want a crispy fried snack. They only take 5 minutes in the air fryer, which makes them so great!

Note, these instructions are written assuming the standard serving size, since you have modified the number of servings, these steps may need to be modified for best results
  1. Cube 2 cups worth of gluten-free bread, and let it dry out in the fridge overnight. I used my recipe for Gluten-Free Sandwhich Bread, and made it from scratch, but you can use store bought as well.
  2. Once your bread feels dry to the touch, place the cubed bread pieces in a food processor, along with the 1 tablespoon of Herb Garden seasoning, and pulse until you have fine bread crumbs. You can make a larger batch of these and freeze the breadcrumbs for any time you want to have them.
  3. Pour 2 cups of the breadcrumbs into a shallow bowl, crack two eggs and whisk them into another shallow bowl, and pour the 1 1/2 cups of flour into a third shallow bowl.
  4. Remove the string cheese from the wrappers, and place on a plate.
  5. Coat each mozzarella stick with the egg, then in the flour, then back in the egg, and then in the breadcrumbs, one at a time. Once you have finished coating each mozzarella stick, with the egg, flour, and breadcumbs, place them on a baking tray.
  6. Once you have all of your mozzarella sticks coated, and they are all on your baking tray, you can place them in the freezer for at least 30 minutes, or up to 6 months. Feel free to make a bigger batch of these to keep in freezer for whenever you'd like.
  7. After 30 minutes, preheat your air fryer to fry at 350 degrees F.
  8. If using an air fryer/toaster combo, you can place the frozen mozzarella sticks on the wire rack and tray that goes with your air fryer, and fry them for 5 minutes.
  9. If using another type of air fryer, space them according to the amount of space you have in the basket, and fry in batches if needed.
  10. These only take 5 minutes when fried at 350.
  11. Heat your marinara sauce on the stove top until hot, and serve with your fried mozzarella sticks!
