- Slice the bread into thick slices.
- In a large shallow bowl add the 1 cup of milk/cream, 1 large egg, 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract, 1 tbsp of orange juice, and 1/8 tsp of sea salt. Mix well until fully combined.
- Add the sliced bread in batches to the custard. Let it sit in the custard for a few minutes, then flip the sliced bread and let it soak in the custard for another 1-2 minutes.
- In a large skillet on medium low heat add enough butter to coat the bottom of it once it's melted.
- Remove the sliced bread from the custard letting excess batter run off, then place the bread into the skillet. Cook as many slices as you can in the skillet.
- Fry the one side of the bread until lightly crispy and brown approximately 1 minute, then flip and brown the second side.
- Repeat using the rest of the slices, adding more butter as needed.
- Once the bread is lightly browned remove to a plate and top with a bit of butter, desired fruit toppings, and a drizzle of maple syrup.
Notes
Greenlite Gluten-Free Bread is a good option if you can find it. I usually find it at Whole Foods or Wegmans. You can use dairy-free milk and butter if needed.
