Gluten Free Chocolate Bark (Saltine Toffee Candy) (Edit recipe)

This dessert is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser! You might know it as Christmas or Hanukkah Crack, Saltine Toffee Candy, Chocolate Covered Saltines, or Chocolate Bark - no matter what you call it, it's irresistibly delicious. Perfect for any occasion, this treat boasts a delightful blend of chocolatey, salty, sweet, and crunchy flavors. The best part? It's a breeze to whip up, and you can easily make a big batch to satisfy any gathering. Keep it gluten free using gluten free table crackers (just double check your other ingredients too!) No one will even realize if "gluten is missing!"

Ingredients

Process

Note, these instructions are written assuming the standard serving size, since you have modified the number of servings, these steps may need to be modified for best results
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. Line one or more baking sheets with foil, ensuring an even layer of crackers without much space in between.
  3. In a small saucepan, melt butter. Add sugar and stir occasionally; don't worry if sugar settles at the bottom.
  4. Spoon the butter-sugar mixture over the crackers, making sure to distribute the sugary goodness evenly.
  5. Bake for 7-10 minutes or until the mixture turns golden and bubbly. Keep a close eye on it so it doesn't burn.
  6. Carefully remove from the oven. While it's hot, add 4-5 chocolate chips to each cracker.
  7. After a minute or two, the chocolate will begin to melt. Use a knife to spread it over the crackers; return to the oven briefly if needed to melt the chocolate more.
  8. Optionally, sprinkle with a little salt too.
  9. Allow to cool in the fridge until the chocolate sets and enjoy!

Notes

Any plain table cracker works well with this recipe but I typically go for Schar or Glutino for gluten free versions. If you do not need to avoid gluten, saltine crackers work great, too! And, if you celebrate Passover, try switching this recipe up with gluten free matzah instead of table crackers - it's a hit! Optional pink or sea salt adds a delightful sweet-salty touch. While not necessary, it's one of my favorite little additions for an extra something fun. For easy storage, layer with wax paper in between to prevent sticking and keep refrigerated.
