Dark Chocolate Waffles for Halloween
Black waffles are a fun treat to make for Halloween. Extra dark cocoa powder turns the waffles black. You could also add some activated charcoal to deepen the pigment. Save this dark chocolate waffles recipe!
Ingredients
- 2 cups2 cups2 cups All Purpose Flour
- 0.5 cup0.5 cup0.5 cup Cocoa Powder, unsweetened
- 0.25 cup0.25 cup0.25 cup Brown Sugar
- 2 tsp2 tsp2 tsp Baking Powder
- 1 tsp1 tsp1 tsp Baking Soda
- 1 tsp1 tsp1 tsp Salt
- 3 whole3 whole3 whole Eggs, separated
- 2 cups2 cups2 cups Buttermilk
- 0.5 cup0.5 cup0.5 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1 tsp1 tsp1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
- 6 oz6 oz6 oz Bittersweet Chocolate, finely chopped
- 4 oz4 oz4 oz Pure Maple Syrup, for serving
- 2 Tbsp2 Tbsp2 Tbsp Unsalted Butter, for serving

Note, these instructions are written assuming the standard serving size, since you have modified the number of servings, these steps may need to be modified for best results
- Whisk flour, cocoa powder, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the center and add egg yolks, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Blend with a fork, then gradually incorporate dry ingredients, mixing just until combined.
- Using an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat egg whites in a small bowl until soft peaks form. Working in 2 batches, fold egg whites into batter just until combined. Fold in chocolate.
- Spray waffle maker lightly with non stick cooking spray. Working in batches, cook waffles until cooked through. Transfer to a wire rack set inside a baking sheet, cover loosely with foil, and keep warm in oven until ready to serve.
- Serve waffles with butter and warm syrup.
