Camp Cake (Edit recipe)

A layer cake with a square cut down through the middle and filled with dye-free chocolate gems, so the first slice spills. A clean store-bought cake mix and frosting do the work. The whole trick is in the assembly. Cut the square with a mini cookie cutter and frost the lower layers before you stack, so the gems sit in a well rather than sliding out the side.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole Cake Mix, 1 store-bought clean cake mix (to make things easy)
  • 1/4 cup Dye-Free Chocolate Gems
  • 1 whole Chocolate Frosting, 1 can store-bought clean chocolate frosting

Process

Note, these instructions are written assuming the standard serving size, since you have modified the number of servings, these steps may need to be modified for best results
  1. When preparing to bake your cake mix, divide the batter into 3 cake pans if you'd like it layered with frosting in the middle. Once the cakes are done, let them cool.
  2. Line the cakes on top of each other. Using a mini square cookie cutter, insert the shaper into the center of the top 2 layers of cake and remove the cake pieces. You can also do this in 2 parts for each of the top 2 layers. Save the cake piece for later.
  3. Using an offset spatula, frost the bottom 2 layers of cake.
  4. Fill the hollow center with the dye-free chocolate gems.
  5. Place the top layer on, plug the hole with the saved cake piece, and frost the outside of the cake. Slice and enjoy the surprise!
