Watermelon Basil Seeds Cooler (Edit recipe)

In India during the summer months, you will often find street vendors selling this Watermelon refresher topped with cooling basil seeds (called Sabja or tukmaria seeds). It is delicious & oh so refreshing! Basil seeds, not to be confused with Chia seeds are seeds of the Sweet basil plant (not the Italian basil plant we all know) and are popular in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for their cooling properties. They need to be soaked in water to swell before consuming. If you absolutely can't get your hands on these seeds (try the Indian store!), you can substitute it with Chia seeds.

Note, these instructions are written assuming the standard serving size, since you have modified the number of servings, these steps may need to be modified for best results
  1. Soak 1 tbsp of Basil Seeds (Sabja or Tukmaria seeds) in 1 cup of water for 15-20 mins to swell.
  2. To a blender, add Watermelon, Ice cubes, Milk and Black Salt. Blend until you obtain a somewhat juice consistency. I actually prefer mine to be a bit chunky.
  3. Top with the soaked basil seeds and reserved diced watermelon. Enjoy!
