Note, these instructions are written assuming the standard serving size, since you have modified the number of servings, these steps may need to be modified for best results
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a medium casserole or baking dish (approximately 7x11 or 8x8) combine the milk, maple syrup, and eggs. Whisk together until smooth and set aside.
  3. On a large cutting board slice or tear apart the loaf of bread into small pieces/chunks approximately 1x1.
  4. Add the bread pieces into the prepared custard mixture from step 2 and with a spatula or large spoon, stir until the bread is fully coated. Set aside.
  5. In a medium mixing bowl combine the softened butter, flour, brown sugar, and salt, and stir together until crumbly.
  6. Spread the streusel topping over the bread mixture and top with chocolate chips.
  7. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until the edges are a light golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving. Top with maple syrup, whipped cream, a dusting of icing sugar, or simply enjoy as is.

Notes

This can be prepared the night before. Prepare each element in an airtight container and store the custard mixture in the fridge and the bread and streusel topping at room temperature. In the morning, assemble the French toast bake, top with chocolate chips, and bake.
