Nightshade Free BBQ Sauce (Whole30, Vegan) (Edit recipe)

When I tasted this BBQ sauce the first time I made it, a single tear rolled down my cheek. If you can't have nightshades, you understand the pain of losing beloved foods like BBQ sauce. This recipe tastes identical to BBQ sauce. It's the smokiest, most authentic flavor I've ever tried in a nightshade-free version. And it's paleo, vegan, and Whole30 compatible!

  1. Sauté onion and carrots in cooking fat on medium heat until onions have a little color, about 10 minutes.
  2. Add garlic and dates, and sauté for another 3-4 minutes, until the dates break down and the mixture starts to look sticky.
  3. Turn heat to low and add apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, 1/2 cup apple juice, smoked salt, and instant coffee.
  4. Stir to combine and let simmer until thickened, about 10 minutes.
  5. Carefully add to blender with remaining 1/4 cup apple juice and blend until smooth.
  6. Slather onto meat before baking or grilling, use as a dip, or use however you prefer your BBQ sauce!
