Homemade Vanilla Extract (Edit recipe)

For every ounce of vodka or bourbon, you will need 0.1 ounces of vanilla beans. This ratio should allow for you to manipulate the recipe however you'd like. Choose organic vodka and vanilla beans if you'd like organic vanilla extract. Containers I use can be found here. Vanilla beans I use can be found here.

Ingredients

  • 4 oz Vodka, at least 80 proof, bourbon can be used as well
  • 0.4 oz Vanilla Bean Pod, Madagascar is commonly used, but there are many types if you'd like to experiment

Process

Note, these instructions are written assuming the standard serving size, since you have modified the number of servings, these steps may need to be modified for best results
  1. Slice vanilla beans lengthwise and then cut them in half.
  2. Place vanilla beans into 4 oz container.
  3. Cover with vodka or bourbon (at least 80 proof) and leave just a bit of headspace. Lid the container.
  4. Store container in a cool, dark place and shake whenever you think about it. I try for once a week. The more you shake, the stronger the extract (sooner). Extract is read to use after 6 months, but you can easily age it for 12.

  1. We LOVE making our own homemade vanilla extract! Thank you for the tip about shaking it – that is new to me. These bottles are so cute too – perfect for little gifts!! Immediately added them to my cart. 🤭
